The Inspiration

Produced from 1950 to 1967, the Volkswagen T1 became one of the most recognisable vehicles of the twentieth century.

Beginning life as a practical transporter, it soon developed a character and identity of its own. From commercial vans and buses to Westfalia camper conversions, the T1 opened up new possibilities for travel and became closely associated with freedom, individuality and life beyond the everyday.

As the first generation of the Volkswagen Type 2, the T1 laid the foundations for a culture that would continue to evolve for generations.

The T1 Era T-Shirt celebrates that original chapter and the vehicle at the heart of it.

The Design

The artwork is built around the history and character of the T1, combining the vehicle itself with details drawn from its production era.

References within the design document elements of the original vehicle, including its 1950 to 1967 production period, engine specifications and the different names by which the T1 became known around the world.

These details transform the artwork from a simple illustration of an iconic vehicle into a visual record of its story, celebrating both the engineering behind the T1 and the culture that developed around it.

The result is a design that looks back at the original Volkswagen Type 2 while recognising the lasting influence it continues to have today.

The Meaning

The Colour Palette

The artwork uses Beige Grey / Beigegrau (L472) and Sealing Wax Red / Siegellackrot (L53), an iconic two-tone colour combination offered on early VW T1 models.

The pairing reflects the distinctive character of the original vehicles, combining understated neutrality with a bold accent that connects the design directly to the visual heritage of the VW T1.

Heavyweight Fabric

Every Vanture garment begins with a deliberate choice of foundation. For the T1 Era T-Shirt, we selected a premium 280 GSM heavyweight cotton jersey that delivers substance, comfort and durability in equal measure.

The heavyweight jersey gives the T-shirt a substantial feel and considered structure while remaining comfortable and breathable for everyday wear. Its smooth cotton surface provides an ideal foundation for the artwork, allowing fine detail, linework and colour to be reproduced with clarity.

Relaxed Fit
